The only verb that does not follow the rule for the formation of the imperfect is être: j'étais tu étais il, elle, on était nous étions vous étiez ils, elles étaient. The following is a list of the most common irregular present tense verbs whose imperfect forms follow the general rules:įalloir (to be necessary) and pleuvoir (to rain) are used only in the third person singular form in the imperfect: il fallait (it was necessary) and il pleuvait (it was raining). (They used to go to the beach every year.) Drop the ‐ons from the nous form and add the imperfect endings. Irregular verbs follow the same imperfect formation rules as do regular verbs.
